By downloading this software, you are agreeing to be bound by the Software License Agreement - a copy of which may be viewed here.

Your Symbian phone must be running Series 60 3rd Edition or later. Currently, the installer only supports English language install.

From your Phone's S60 Browser
1) Goto http://boopsie.com
2) When accessed from the phone's browser, the above URL will detect your operating system and offer you the correct download.
3) When prompted, download and install the application for S60 3rd Edition. You may also download and run the J2ME version. However, the S60 native version is faster to use and has more functionality, so we recommend the S60 native version.

Overview

Privacy and Network Usage
Boopsie uses the following services on your phone:
Make Phone Calls
Making a connection to the Internet
Allowing you to add contacts
Accessing location information/GPS

Boopsie requires the use of the data network on your phone. It has no functionality without a network connection. If you do not have an 'unlimited' data plan, you should carefully monitor your data use thru your carrier. Boopsie will display a blank screen if you have disabled its access to the data network.

Boopsie also has the capbility to access the GPS hardware on your phone (if available) to find things near your current location. You must have the device's GPS enabled by going to the General section under Settings of the phone and choosing the Positioning application. Boopsie will prompt you as to whether or not you would like to use your location/GPS information to find local places. You may select 'Never Allow' to disable Boopsie's access to the GPS; or you may select 'Always Allow' to enable the GPS to be active the entire time Boopsie is running; or you may select 'Allow per channel' to have the GPS enabled only on those channels that are location aware (like CitySearch or Starbucks Store Locator). The trade-off between having the GPS functionality set to 'Always allow' vs. 'Allow per channel' is that the startup time for the Satellite acquisition can sometimes be long. If you have the GPS enabled from the start of the application (Always allow), then the GPS chipset has time to 'warm up' and when you go to a location aware channel, you should get immediately relevant results for that channel. However, the GPS chipset reduces battery life, so you should only use 'Allow always' if you are a frequent user of the location services of Boopsie. If you choose 'Allow per channel', then the GPS is enabled only on those channels that are location aware. It may take a few minutes for the GPS chipset to acquire satellites, so be patient.

How to use Boopsie
Boopsie does not work like Google or Yahoo!.  Instead of using form based search (where you type in a term and hit 'submit' or 'go'), Boopsie uses a vertical (or channel) search.  You first pick a channel, then you may start typing the search term(s).  Boopsie uses a multi-term prefix search.  What that means is that you only have to type the first parts of words for Boopsie to find what you are after.

So, if you are looking in the Wikipedia channel for "Uma Thurman", all you have to do is select the Wikipedia channel from the main menu, then type 'um th'.  That is enough for Boopsie to find "Uma Thurman".  After each keystroke, Boopsie will display possible matches for what you have typed.  If you make a typing error, you will immediately notice it because Boopsie will display a blank page and a 'no matches found' error.

As another example, if you are looking for "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" on the Amazon Books channel, all you have to do is select "Amazon Books" from the main menu, then type 'h p a t s s' - voila!  There's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" - that beats typing out the whole thing on a mobile phone!
Once you have found your target, all you have to do is click on it and Boopsie transfers you to your browser to view the mobile friendly page.  Therefore, Boopsie is a thin layer between you and the *exact* content you are looking for.

The top-level Boopsie menu is also searchable this way.  So, when  you first start Boopsie, if you want to search in the Wikipedia channel, just type 'w' and you'll see all the channels starting with 'w' - like 'Wikipedia'.  If you want to search for Zagat reviewed restaurants, enter 'z', etc.   The top level 'All Channels' menu is updated automatically on the Boopsie server.   So, once you have the client, you get the new channels automatically as they are added.

If you want to perform broad based search that does not fit into a Boopsie channel, choose the 'General' channel and start typing your search term.  This will still show you potential matches for what you are typing.  However, in the General channel, you need to type the whole word, not just the prefix.  So, to find "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in the General channel, you must type "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".

First Time Use

1) Navigate to the Boopsie icon and launch the application.  Or, you may program a softkey like the Nokia E62 'Own' key to launch Boopsie.  We recommend programming a function key to launch Boopsie so it is easy to return to Boopsie from the Browser.

2) You may then see a status messaging indicating that Boopsie is connecting to the network.

3) If you are out of data network coverage area, you may see a message indicating that Boopsie could not connect to the network.  Remember: just because you have 'bars', does not guarantee that you are in data network coverage.

4) Your phone will then register itself with the Boopsie server and display the top-level channel menu.

General Use

1) After the main list of channels appears, you may start to use Boopsie.

2) The main list of channels is also multi-term prefix searchable - just like each channel.  You must choose a channel first, then issue a search.

3) For example, to search Wikipedia, type 'w' to the right of the

.

You'll see the menu narrow down to the channels that have a 'w' as the first letter of the name.

4) Arrow down or click on Wikipedia.

5) You may now start entering your search term(s).  For example, to find "George C. Scott", you might type 'ge c sc'.  After each character you enter, you will see the list narrow down your choices.

6) Select "George C. Scott" and Boopsie will launch the phone's browser and navigate to the mobile friendly Wikipedia page on "George C. Scott"

Menus and Softkeys

Back Softkey
This key has multiple uses that make Boopsie easier to use.  Let's say you are in the CitySearch channel and have typed 'ti ho' in the text entry box and have arrowed down to the 'Tied House - Mountain View' entry; like this:

From here, the Back key helps you navigate more easily.  If you are in the list area and press the Back key, it will move the focus to the text entry box.

If you are in the text entry box and there are characters in the box, pressing Back will erase all characters.

If you are in the text entry box and there are no characters in the text entry box and you press Back, it will take you 'up'  one level to your Home menu.

If you are at the top level/home menu and press Back, it will prompt you to exit Boopsie.

Options Softkey
Pressing the Options key will display the following menu:

Home - Takes you to your Home channel.  By default, this is the 'All Channels' menu.  However, you may change this by using 'Set as home' when in a particular channel.  For example, if you want to make the 'Zagat Survey Restaurants' channel your Home channel, navigate to the 'Zagat Survey Restaurants' channel from the All Channels menu, then when the Zagat channel appears, you may choose the Options softkey and 'Set as home' to set your default Home channel to Zagat.  Subsequently, every time you choose 'Home' or start Boopsie,  it will go to your Home channel.

All Channels - Takes you to the Boopsie main menu displaying all channels.

Add to Favorites - Add the highlighted channel to your Favorites channel.

Refresh - Refresh the current channel.

Set as home - Set the highlighted channel as the Home channel. Subsequent selection of Home will navigate to the selected channel.

Settings - You may change Font Size, Access Point, Network Timeout, Use Data Network, Use GPS and Skins/Themes use by selecting Settings.

Font Size: You may choose Small, Medium or Large font size

Access Point: If 'Never prompt' is selected, Boopsie will remember your last Access Point selection. If 'Always prompt' is selected, Boopsie will always prompt for which Access Point to use. If 'Never prompt' is selected and the last Access Point is unavailable, Boopsie will re-prompt for the Access Point the next time the application is run. You must re-select 'Never prompt' to stop Boopsie from prompting the next time Boopsie is run.

Network Timeout: Ignore this for now. 0 means no timeout and is the default.

Use Data Network: If 'Always allow' is selected, then Boopsie will always access the network without prompting. If 'Allow until exit' is selected, Boopsie will use the network without prompting, but prompt the next time Boopsie is run. If 'Never allow' is selected, then Boopsie will not run. Boopsie requires network access to function, so you must choose 'Always allow' or 'Allow until exit'.

Use GPS: Boopsie is capable of using the GPS source of the phone (onboard, bluetooth, etc.) on 'location aware' channels. These 'location aware' channels have the latitude and longitude for each target in the channel. For example, the Starbucks Store Locator channel has the latitude and longitude for every Starbucks store listed. If you enable GPS, then when you go to the Starbucks Store Locator channel, you will automatically see the nearest Starbucks to your current position. If you do not have GPS enabled for your phone, then the GPS settings within Boopsie will be unused. You must enable the GPS in your phone's Config/Settings area as well (see your phone's documentation for instructions on enabling the use of GPS for applications on your phone). If you select 'Always allow', when Boopsie is running, it will constantly be accessing the position data from your GPS - regardless of whether you are on a 'location aware' channel or not. If you are using the built-in GPS in the phone, this option may rapidly depleat your battery. If you select 'Allow per channel', then Boopsie will only access your GPS when you are on a 'location aware' channel - we use this setting on our phones. If you select 'Never allow', then Boopsie will not access the GPS capabilities of your phone.

Use Skins: If 'On' is selected, then Boopsie will display itself using the skin/theme chosen for the device.  If 'Off' is selected, then the Boopsie white background and faint logo will be used to display itself.

<-- Skin On  <-- Skin Off

Help - Launch the help application to display the Boopsie help file.

About -  This dialog will show the current version of the software, copyright information and website address.

Exit - Exits Boopsie without prompting.

Location Aware Channels

Boopsie has several channels that are 'location aware'. These channels have locations with latitude and longitude information so that you may use maps and directions from location to location. Example location aware channels are Starbucks Store Locator, CitySearch, FedEx Store Locator, etc. A location aware channel will display a magnifying glass with a cross-hair in the magnifying glass. Non-location aware channels will not display the cross-hairs.

Assuming the GPS is enabled for the phone and in the Boopsie Settings dialog, selecting the CitySearch Los Angeles channel

will automatically show the businesses that are the closest to your current position.

In the above case, the phone is located in South Laguna Beach, CA. To find the nearest Italian Restaurants type 'rest ital' and the text filter will combine with the GPS and show you the nearest Italian Restaurants.

To view Restorante Rumari on the map, choose the Options softkey and choose 'View on map'

Now, to set the 'search center' to Restaurant Rumari, highlight Restaurante Rumari and then select Options -> Search from here. This will set our perceived location to Restaurante Rumari. NOTE: this can be done on any location aware channel - regardless of whether you have GPS enabled or not. Therefore, this is a way to get the benefit of mapping and directions without requiring the GPS.

A message will then appear at the bottom of the screen indicating your position has been set.

To then find direction to Mastro's Steakhouse, type 'mas stea' and highlight Mastro's Steakhouse. Note that Mastro's is approximately 13 miles from Rumari's.

Then, select Options -> Direction to here and the written directions and a map will be displayed.

Location Aware Channel Menu

As described above, the following choices are available on location aware channels. If you have a S60 phone with an enabled GPS, we recommend enabling Boopsie to use the GPS by going to the Boopsie Settings dialog and choosing 'Allow per channel'. Please read below how your 'search center' is set and cleared and when cleared your GPS acts as your 'search center'.

Download listing : selecting this will download the name, address, phone number, etc. of the currently highlighted listing.

View on map : display the highlighted location on a map.

Search from here : set your 'search center' to the highlighted location. Subsequent searches will display the distance from your 'search center' to each list item.

Directions to here : display driving directions from your 'search center' to the highlighted location. NOTE: if you have not set a 'search center', but you have GPS and it is enabled from the Boopsie Settings dialog, then 'Directions to here' will display directions from your current location to the highlighted item.

Clear search center : this will erase your 'search center' and discontinue sorting items by distance (unless you have GPS activated). Clearing the search center while you have GPS active will force Boopsie to sort the list by distance from your current location. If you have GPS enabled, clear your search center and go to the Starbucks Store Locator channel - it will show you the nearest Starbucks. Also, if you are on a CitySearch channel, you can type in a filter like 'rest ital' for 'restaurants, italian' and all Italian Restaurants will be sorted by distance from your current location. The display is typically updated every one tenth (0.1) mile.

Click to call : this will dial the highlighted item.
